High-level Event of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU

On 18 June, 2019, the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU hosted in Bucharest the first International High-Level meeting reuniting Special Envoys for Combatting Antisemitism and the World Jewish Congress, representing the Jewish communities from around the world. The event was organized in close cooperation with and aimed to promote a debate between Jewish community representatives and Special Envoys in view of supporting the adoption of strategies for preventing and fighting antisemitism, racism, xenophobia, radicalization and hate speech.

The event was opened by the Prime-Minister of Romania, Ms. Viorica Dancila, who recalled that the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU has set the subject of combatting antisemitism as one of its main agenda priorities and expressed the hope that its projects in this area will be continued by future Presidencies.

The Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU presented a statement upon concluding the event by which it reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to and supporting initiatives directed at tackling the challenges faced by members of Jewish communities. The statement identifies four main areas of commitment: security of Jewish communities, data collection on hate crime, Holocaust education and remembrance, and adoption of the IHRA non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism.

Multiple IHRA delegates were present at this event and the IHRA Chair, Georges Santer, also gave an address.
