On Thursday, 27 January 2022, at 12:15 (CET), the Maison d'Izieu pays homage to Léa Felblum on the International Holocaust Remembrance and Prevention of Crimes against Humanity Day in the presence of the students from Frédéric Mistral secondary school in Saint-Maurice-l’Exil (38) and the public primary school in Novalaise (73).
This highly symbolic date refers to the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp on 27 January 1945. Homage will be paid to the 44 children and 7 educators of the colony, victims of the roundup on 6 April 1944 before their deportation, and specifically, to Léa Feldblum (25 years old at that time), the only educator of the colony to return. For this homage, nothing can be stronger than the words extracted from the deposition she gave to the office of prisoners, internees and deportees in Montpellier on her return from the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp on 11 May 1945. This deposition was found in 2020 by the Maison d’Izieu in the departmental archives of Hérault. Thanks to the research of Kerstin Stubenvoll who was then working at the House of the Wannsee Conference in Berlin. Year 10 students of Frédéric Mistral secondary school in Saint-Maurice-l’Exil (38) and year 5 and 6 students from Novalaise primary school (73) will take part in the ceremony.
"The anxious face of innocent children who never saw again the country where they had so much fun can never be erased from a woman’s heart."
— Léa Feldblum
