First hand accounts are vital in being able to access the past. This project sought to document the genocide of the Roma and spread the knowledge about what happened to Roma in various countries. Within the project, interviews with Roma survivors and witnesses about persecutions and massacres in Eastern Europe were carried out. The project also consisted of two research trips (to Romania’s Transylvania region and to Serbia) to gather testimonies about the fates of Roma groups in these regions.
The gathered information was presented at an exhibition, and the book Roma Memory was written based on the exhibition material. A French short version of the book is available here. The project intended to give the memories of the Roma victims back to their families and to give back the Roma people their history.
