Documenta was initiated by several Croatian peace and human rights organizations in order to counter both public silence and falsification of history regarding war crimes in Yugoslavia and the post-Yugoslavian countries. While documenting the fates of those killed and missing during World War II, as well as of victims of political violence during Yugoslav Socialism and the wars of the 1990s, Documenta’s goal is to establish factual truth and allow for dialogue on interpretations. By organizing study trips and raising public awareness, Documenta confronts the lack of research and appropriate commemoration regarding many Killing Sites, for example of the Ustaše massacre of Serbs in Glina in May 1941. Documenta’s founder Vesna Teršeli? was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997.
