Central Teachers‘ Seminar organized in Austria

Co-Heads of the Austrian Delegation to the IHRA, Hannah Lessing and Michael Baier, represented the IHRA at this year’s Central Teachers‘ Seminar organized by the Austrian Holocaust Education Platform erinnern.at.

The seminar focused on the events in Austria in the year 1938, among them the so-called “Anschluss” and the November Pogrom. During the discussions questions were raised about the sudden and unprecedented atrocities registered in 1938 and their possible roots as well as about the longstanding tradition of antisemitism in Austria and its recurrence today.

At the introductory session Michael Baier informed the participants about IHRA’s vision, mission and priorities, whereas Hannah Lessing gave an overview on the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism, which was established in 1995 to express Austria's special responsibility towards the victims of National Socialism and to render payments to victims of National Socialism, in particular to those who had previously received little or no compensation; to those in need of special assistance or those whose personal circumstances warrant relief.
